 The Technique of the Professional Make-Up Artist
Extremely informative book, but definitely NOT for a novice. If you do not have experience in photography, television and an expansive knowledge of the different types of make-up, the types of make-up may sound foreign. There are no specific name brands mentioned, just color codes (ie: RCMA). The flow of the book is much like that of a textbook and is reminiscent of being in school (which isn't a horrible thing). For some reason I was expecting picture tutorials and step-by-step examples, but the entire book is in black and white (the only color picture is on the back of the book) so you can't get a full appreciation of what they are talking about without reading. If you are buying this book for information purposes, it will be an excellent buy; however, if you are a visual learner and not big on reading and you are expecting a book full of color and step by step tutorials, you will be sorely disappointed.
 So stick with K. Aucoin then!
Just because this is a book for makeup professionals (and a good one at that) and doesn't give enough "tips" on how to wear your eyeliner doesn't make it a bad book. I find these less than stellar reviews to be irrelevant.
Geared towards professionals
This book is definately geared towards the professional makeup artist. I'm an avid Halloween costumer and wanted to try special effects makeup but this book was over my head. The author assumes that you have some basic knowledge of makeup technique and the lack of color photos makes it impossible for the novice to figure out what he's talking about. I'm thinking of purchasing Laura Thudium's makeup book to learn the basics and then hopefully this book will be more useful.
Not very current...
This was a good book and gave a lot of technical advice and illustration but it didn't help me as much as I was hoping. It's dated-- now we're having to deal with changes in makeup due to Hi-Def, etc. These are not addressed... nor are many other things that I think are relevant to doing makeup for film/tv in 2007.
 Only relevant to FX artists
Why didn't I listen to the other reviewers? The tiny section on "beauty" makeup is dated and unhelpful.
