Cute, but lacking. I really liked a lot of projects in this book and I felt that the author really put a lot of thought and creativity into her ideas. I like that she encourages readers to put their own original twists into the projects, and provides some really useful tips. She has a great writing style, which made this book fun to read. The instructions, however, need a lot of editing. Several are missing or are wrong(several measurements are off), which from what I understand are being corrected in newer editions of the book. With some good editing, this would be a wonderful book, especially for beginner sewers.
Great effort on Amy's part Half of me really likes this book, but the other half doesn't. At first glance, it's glossy and pretty, but after actually reading it, one can quickly see that it lacks correct terms, thorough instructions, even vital measurements. It's almost whimsical, and certainly not very professionally done. There are no finished dimensions given and no yardage requirements, both something I would expect from a book like this. I found myself thinking, "Wow! Anyone really can write a book." While it has some worthwhile projects in it, they need to be used more as a jumping off point rather than a good tutorial on how to make a project. I would be lost if I were a beginner seamstress. Thankfully, I'm not. Amy's enthusiasm does come through clearly, and that makes the book enjoyable and the one thing that kept me from returning it. There are a few projects I will make out of the book, so I will keep it on my shelf as part of my collection of sewing books.
Bend-o-saurus aceness with an Angry Chick who isn't as angry as you'd think This is a really free and easy book with very inspiring projects.
The mood is very positive and encouraging... But it is certainly not dumbed-down.
Some people sounded frustrated with the book - but I wasn't at all - I really enjoyed it and found it refreshing. I'm def the kinda person who just likes to cut'n'go when it comes to sewing, so it suited me.
Love Amy's blog, her style and her book too
good inspiration I am an experienced sewer, but have not sewn in many years. I borrowed this book from the library, loved it and bought my own. Projects are fun and funky and quick to assemble. I do not rely heavily on instructions, so i have little trouble in putting things together. I am inspired to dabble with my sewing machine again because the designs are current. The cut-the-corner tips are pretty good. Not sure if a real beginner would be successful, but a moderate amount of experience would make successful projects, for sure.
Truly a beginner's guide to sewing and with great projects! Love this book! Before using this book, I had never sewn a stitch, but was aching to learn. This book has a wonderful introduction to sewing in the beginning - with detailed descriptions of tools and accessories as well as methods and tips - invaluable to the newest of the new to sewing. Each project typically builds on the skills practiced on previous projects - not necessarily having a new technique with each project, but it may help to have glanced over the tips and tricks sections of all the projects before trying one further into the book (especially if you're inexperienced like me).
I will agree that the editing of the book falls a little short. So far, I've tried 4 projects from the book and they have each had at least one error - some errors were easy to spot (i.e., when spec'ing out the dimensions for handles, 13"x16" was obviously wrong), but others were quite frustrating for a beginner. Fortunately, there is a very helpful group on flickr named with the title of the book. There is a discussion group there with errata for the group as well as general questions / answers - extremely helpful. I would recommend using this group along with the book - searching on your project before you start for some explanation of known trouble spots.
All in all, great book with really fun projects, mostly easy to understand patterns, and great tips for beginners!
