Toot & Puddle: The One and Only This is one of the three Toot & Puddle books that I bought for my granddaughter. She loves them. The illustrations are lovely.
More Toot and Puddle This series of books has proved to be a big hit with all the children I have given it too. No matter which book, it quickly becomes the child's favorite. It isn't just the children, I have found that the parents instantly love the books-especially the wonderful illustrations. This series is on the top of my list too.
The latest Toot and Puddle... I was awaiting the latest edition of Toot and Puddle, as my daughter and I are big fans. This is as story of how Opal learns to deal with someone who copies her, then gets all the praise. There is a good lesson for children in how to do so with grace. However, the story seems to end abruptly and leaves me wondering how things really turned out in the end.
Not my favorite Jane is a new student and is in Opal's class at school. But Jane prefers to be called Bubbles. Bubbles follows Opal everywhere she goes and begins to copy everything Opal does. It annoys Opal but she understands that Bubbles is new and wants to fit in.
As the school year goes on, Bubbles does everything Opal does, but she does them in a bigger way that draws more attention to her and makes her the teacher's pet. But when the spring theatrical extravaganza arrives, Bubbles is unable to dance. Opal helps her because she wants the chorus line to be perfect. And the chorus line was perfect, but it was Opal, not Bubbles, who was the big star of the evening.
I'm not entirely sure of the message of The One and Only. I hope it is that helping someone, even if they annoy you, can be "a good thing." However, I was uncomfortable that this seemed to be another storybook where females are in mean-spirited competition with each other.
This is not my favorite book.
Armchair Interviews says: The illustrations in The One and Only are delightful. They are whimsical and quirky and children will love the cute little pigs.
