Absolutely Awful! What's the problem with this book? Number One, the hero is constantly torturing himelf (5 years, according to the story) that he got drunk and some companion of his raped a young girl that was supposed to be protected. OK, so you screwed up. To make it more "sad" or "emotionally moving", the girl conveniently kills herself three days later and leaves Hero-Boy to beat himself up for the next five years. Uh-huh. Next, the story wasn't that bad, but the pacing is TERRIBLE!! One minute Belle meets her cousin's mysterious neighbor, three days later they're tearing off their clothes & trying to do the horizontal lambada. Then there's the obligatory fight so she takes off for London and fakes she's going to marry some other man, so he tears off after her about two days later. Then in London, there's some more obligatory misunderstanding and attempts to mate. Basically, within three weeks of meeting, they've done the naughty & are married by special license (which took about three weeks to get back then, if I remember correctly). Of course, the parents show up and decide Belle's so smart that they can totally trust her to have picked this random man to marry. The rest of the story is a romp through balls & tea shops trying to catch the man that's trying to kill the hero. The final showdown is just plain stupid and it took me about ten seconds to figure out who the mysterious killer was. Yep, I will never need to read this one again nor will I recommend it to anyone. In fact, I will probably not even remember it in another week. I can't remember the guy's name and I just read it twelve hours ago. Oh, well. I could have been doing something that would have wasted time in a worse way, like, ummmmm, well, I'll think of something eventually.
Boring like its hero! I read this because it's sequel to Splendid which I enjoyed. What happened to Arabella here I think was she's just simply bored because Emma was busy with Alex(they're having a baby) and the season is over that she pursued her cousin's neighbor who is the most boring and less attractive(also stupid by suggesting to his nemesis they meet on his in-laws townhouse) hero on Julia Quinn books. And I don't see why Arabella is attracted to this John Blackwood (so weak and helpless, he could not even defend her and her mom at the crisis in which he brought, thanks to Persephone,Alex and William who saved the day). They have NO chemistry and the courtship is under develop to get to point that they can't live without the other and it made it so corny. I think it would be more interesting if Ms. Quinn just paired Arabella to Anthony Bridgerton therefore uniting these two series. If you would read Splendid, skip this one(because it's waste of time) and proceed to Minx (more delightful).
A bit dull I didn't realize until I started reading the other reviews that this was one of Julia Quinn's first novels. That explains a lot. I liked the heroine, she was cute and interesting. The hero was a bit dull. I just didn't buy that he would be that scarred and tortured over what had happened to him in the past...not to the degree that he dwells upon it. He is so afraid of telling the heroine his secret, but it doesn't make sense that anyone would fault him for what happened. The love scenes weren't very steamy but the ending was very romantic. Overall, a decent read but wouldn't recommend it be your first Julia Quinn novel if you haven't read her books before.
Passionate and tender- she loves him! Beauty and the Beast revisited! Lady Arabella Blydon (Belle) meets solitary, gruesomely injured ex-soldier Lord John Blackwood. Scarred internally and out, John has true war survivor guilt. Something extra horrible happened while he was in drunken command, that he would have - and should have - given his life to change. He carries this crushing guilt very heavily in his heart, to the point where he thinks he doesn't deserve to fall in love, or be loved by any woman. Aaah. Thank goodness for Belle, who is absolutely fascinated by John and falls head over heels in love with him. His kisses set her on fire, and when he can't help himself and becomes a little more intimate (and aren't those scenes incredible, whew), Belle knows he is the only man for her. Ever! But poor John is still on shaky ground, his damaged heart is still reluctant to accept the love she pours out his way. Oh, this is truly a wonderful love story, electrifying with passion and healing love. You'll put it down at the end with a big sigh and a smile, and a tear in your eye. Simply beautiful.
OK Book, Not Great Story I have read almost all of Quinn's books. I have enjoyed most of them.
This story was ok. It was kind of boring at times. It didn't have enough substance. All of her books seem to follow the same story lines, without much variance except for it being a different family member. Im tired of the Bridgerton family.
