Understanding Artemis Accessible, informative and detailed, Dancing in the Moonlight is another excellent book by a modern worshipper of Hellenismos. The contents give great insight into the worship of an ancient Goddess in modern times, breathing new life into the old ways.
Artemis is perhaps one of the most iconic of the ancient Gods. Widely venerated in the ancient world, She was the Hellenic goddess of forests and hills and was often depicted as a huntress carrying bow and arrows.
The thorough notes, useful appendixes and extensive annotated bibliography are effective in rounding off the book in a way that gives the reader ample opportunity to seek further information.
The festivals give a wonderful balance between ancient practice and the modern insight, something which today's religion benefits from. Most importantly, Thista deals with the issue of post-festival cleaning up that can often seem confusing/daunting to newcomers to these anciently-inspired practices.
The personal elements of her experiences are not hidden or toned down, but instead made clear that they are such and leaves the individual to decide for themselves whether that fits in with their experience of Artemis.
Thista gives a thoughtful insight into Artemis' later association with the moon. This popular idea, which seems to have little foundation beyond later associations with the Titaness Selene, is finally given some clear understanding by a devotee.
An excellent Artemisian read and general resource into reviving the worship of one of Greece's most venerable goddesses.
