We wore out the first copy! My daughter has loved this book since she was only about 6 months old! There's something about the rhythm of the words and the silliness of the pictures that has always appealed to her. While the rhymes may not always follow the most natural flow, it's pretty easy to figure out a way to read it aloud that keeps that rhythm going.
She has a zillion books, but this one has been beloved since the beginning. She is now about 2.5, and we finally broke down and got her a nice new copy since the old one was tattered beyond recognition.
Wiggle Purchased this book for my great niece based on a review in the AARP magazine. Book is good but not the "rave" book I expected from the review.
cronin I love Doreen Cronin's work. Can't wait to share it with my granddaughter.
I'm known as the "book grandmother".
Improves with "Do your ears hang low" We got this book from a box of Cheerios. The rhythm is awkward, but it improves if you sing the book to the tune of one of my dad's favorite camp songs: "Do your ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow?" I had to modify a line or two - for example, it says, "If you wiggle with your breakfast, it might wind up on your head." This is about one syllable too long for both the book's meter and "Do your ears hang low," so, when I sing it to my daughter, the line corresponds to "Can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow," and I sing, "If you wiggle with your breakfast, it might LAND on your head." My daughter (she's two) requests this book frequently and now that I sing the lyrics, I have the book memorized. I used to memorize other things, but now I memorize children's books. My favorite books for creative rhyming will always be Dr. Seuss (read the highly sardonic one-star review of Green Eggs and Ham on this site - not mine, but I have copied it in full and sent it to friends) and also Sandra Boynton. I like Sandra Boynton's books - particularly Hippos Go Berserk - because her story lines are somewhat unpredictable. Enjoy!
Funny Bedtime story My children ages 4 and 2 absolutely love this book. They enjoy the zany characters and light-hearted rhymes. It is a fun way to get them introduced to rhymes for pre-reading skills in a child friendly manner. Definately a winner for a gift or for your own little one.
