Dear Carmelide, there was no inexplicable decision to reveal in the intoduction that Jenny Dolly commits suicide. This is a fact and a major part of the true and tragic story of the Dolly Sisters. My book is NOT fiction but non-fiction. It is a biography where facts are relevant. It is certainly not a book for readers of mystery novels who I presume generally want to to read fiction, unless of course they wish to read a true, real life story.
The Author Spoils the Book I was really looking forward to reading this dual biography and paid the publishers price. I had heard of the Dolly Sisters many times but knew very little of their story. I have just begun reading it and am on page 19, however the author, Gary Chapman made the inexplicable decision to reveal in the introduction that Jenny Dolly commits suicide, which for me has spoiled the entire book. I have learned by experience, that when reading classics to forgo the introduction, I certainly wish I had done so in this case. I recommend this book to those readers of mystery novels who like to read the last chapter first to see how it ends and then go back and start at the beginning, thereby relieving themselves of any suspense. I wonder how Mr. Chapman feels about others who reveal the denouement
Icons of a glittering age I had heard of the Dolly sisters through seeing the old movie of their lives, starring Betty Grable and June Haver and was interested in reading the biography of their lives, and what a marvellous, colourful story it is! The girls, Rosie and Jenny were identical twins, born to a former Hungarian ballerina and arrived in the US at the age of 12.They were immediately accepted into the Ziegfeld Follies and then into Vaudeville and movies. They were natural, untrained dancers with light but pleasant singing voices and, unlike the portrayal of them as blondes in the movie of their lives, were tiny, dainty, dark haired and very exotic looking girls with an oriental look about them. They dressed magnificently throughout their lives, being mainly dressed by the top Parisian couturiers of the day. They were equally famous for their fabulous jewellery collections and for their love affairs with famous and wealthy men but managed to keep their reputations as "nice" girls. It's a great book for any lovers of show biz and for those who, as I do, love to read about the goings on of the rich and famous.
