Excellent! With military stories, good character development, and a non-stop plot, there's not much more one could ask. It's a fun book I'll look forward to re-reading in a couple years.
Good Sci-Fi Combat If you like the Bolo stories, you will probably like this book. I plan to get the rest of the series now.
Needs a LOT of work I'm not going to repeat what others have posted here, except to agree as many have noted that the barrage of military acronyms are confusing, especially to those who have never been exposed to them, or have little knowledge of them.
Also the amount of senseless, needless foul language used by the "troops" is incredible, and seems to be used more as "fill words" rather than to convey the impact of a situation on an individual. I rate the volume of such words as being right up with low-class comedians who think that continuous use of the "f" word is high-class comedy.
The publisher needs to tighten their standards, as this book is confusing and hard to follow, despite the praise of other well-known authors.
Two stars for a great concept that should have been realized in one book. When I read the back of the first book in this series I had visions in my head of great storytelling in an exciting and vibrant new Sci-Fi universe. What I got was a lot of odds and ends. There is simply too much detail in these books about things that should be going on in the background and not interfering with the pace of the story to make them enjoyable to me. For example there are numerous Military and Political meetings and situations, planning, talking and preparing for things about to happen instead of those things actually happening. After 200 pages in the first book the only difference is that the main character is now having breifings on a military transport instead of a military base.
Alien invasion is one of my favorite genres and I had such hope for the books in the series, especially after reading the synopsis on the back of them, that I bought three more, thinking that the pacing had to have improved. It did not. I spent most of my time flipping pages to try and find something that would capture my attention so I could start reading every single page only to be frustrated by the minutiae of military and political life.
If that's your thing you will love these books as the detail is well done, if not I cannot recommend them.
Military sci fi at its best Absolutely wonderful. I was blown away by this book, no pun intended. Ringo certainly knows how to write his battle scenes and lays out an amazing progression of events that seem to always lead to each successive event succinctly and seamlessly. Of course, if you are not a fan of military fiction or military science fiction, then you will not like this at all.
The alien races are certainly foreign and very alien, but they bring with them an awesome array of advanced technology that allows 21st century (2001) Earth to play catch up with the rest of the Galactic Federation. From grav suits, to rail guns, to AIDs, to camouflage, Ringo certainly covers them all. What makes this book so great is that the humans do kick some serious a**, and they do it with style. Well under Lieutenant O'Neal they do.
Which is another point I like. Most books will have a great character and the rest are all sub characters. In Hymn we not only see O'Neal, but we also see Sergeant Pappas, or Gunny, who is also an amazing character to read about. In fact, the chapters flipped back and forth between O'Neal and Pappas, never leaving you to read a dull chapter in order to resume the story (although I can't quite figure out why Pappas was included, except to maybe set up a future book?, since he didn't really add anything).
If you love military sci fi, this is most certainly a book you should read. A definite recommend.
5 stars.
