Rob Thomas is a God Among Men Rob Thomas is one of the best television writers there is. He created and ran the beautifully intricate and painfully real Veronica Mars, which is by far the most clever and well written show to grace the small screen in recent years. Thomas has two new shows debuting in the first quarter of 2009, so to psyche myself up for a year of glorious, MARSesque television, I thought I would delve into Thomas's early career, in which he wrote a few young adult novels.
The most popular of the bunch was RATS SAW GOD, which featured a stoner named Steve York writing a one-hundred page long essay about the year that turned his life upside down. The narrative switches back and forth between Steve's essay and his current life. The essay is a lot more captivating in the beginning, but the way that writing the end of it has a real, palpable impact on what's happening to him "in the now" really makes the final pages of the "present day" sections really good. Thomas isn't afraid to touch on controversial issues, but the way that he approaches them never stinks of after-school-specialitis. Instead of writing as an adult telling stories about teens, Thomas completely experiences these events through the eyes of Steve York, making the narrative feel real and accessible.
Though Thomas's television writing is considerably stronger than his prose, his novels are still shining examples of what makes a good young adult story. He writes in a way that directly involves the reader, wording his sentences in a way that requires participation in order to completely grasp it. He will refer to characters before they're introduced, forcing the reader to be introduced to them in a very natural way. He will drop pop culture references without explaining them. All of these methods, along with Thomas's deep understanding of the teenage thought process.
7/10
I am absolutely in love with this book! Rats Saw God is the kind of book that is so wonderful and full of insights that you just want to read it again the minute you finish it. The characters are all amazing and easy to connect with so you can feel their pain and happiness as if it were happening to you. A fine example of what a YA novel can be.
Great Book My son recently read this book. As an avid young teenage reader he can be very picky so I "previewed" it for him. Needless to say, he didn't get to crack the binding until I finished it (over a weekend). He liked it as much as I. Well written and very insightful with enough food for later conversation and thought.
One of the best YA books out there Being a fan of Veronica Mars, I decided to read this book, hoping for a book of the same quality of the TV show produced by the author, Rob Thomas. I was not disappoointed.
Rats Saw God tells the story of messed up Steve York, who has to write a 100 page eassy in order to graduate. He decides to write about his last two years in high school and is forced to face the ruin of his life at the same time.
The story deals with a lot of relationship issues. Steve is disconnected from his father, who he calls "the astronaut," and does not attempt to fix their relationship. There is also the relationship between Steve and his ex-girlfriend, Wanda "Dub" Varner.
I liked how Steve narrates his story in a witty way and how even when he does seem apathetic and sarcastic, he still has emotions, making him a 3-D and interesting character.
Highly recommend this book to teenagers, but to adults as well.
Rob Thomas is a Genius A huge fan of his TV/Movies, I gave this book a shot. It was great. The writing was the same... some of the details he even re-used in Veronica Mars. I'm looking forward to reading his other books.
