Customer comments on this selection.
Multidimensional life This is the second book devoted to photos of Karajan that I have bought in recent months. The other, by E. Lessing, includes many more photos from selected episodes in Karajan's life, some very informal - Karajan getting off a train, for instance. A Life in Pictures has more range (the whole of Karajan's life) but less depth. The best photos feature Karajan the conductor, those with his wife and children come a close second. There are fewer spontaneous photos than in the Lessing, which is a shame. Ultimately this collection reminds us just how photogenic Karajan was, especially in his middle years, and how important image can be to the talent and power of a conductor. But listen to his recordings to understand truly what all the fuss is about.
Fine photographic book on Karajan's life. In the 2008 centenary of Karajan's birth, this book presents a photographic biography of the conductor's life. Many previously unseen images are presented, along with familiar shots as well. Karajan dominated European musical life of the second half of the 20th century, and remains a figure of importance through his vast recorded legacy. He and Leonard Bernstein were last of the legendary maestros; as famous as movie stars. This book illustrates Karajan's great charisma and his obsessional work in the recording studio. What the book does not give us are the musical reasons for his fame. For that, there is a wealth of recordings to choose from.
It's a gorgeous presentation indeed, suitable for coffee tables and library shelf alike. HERBERT VON KARAJAN: A LIFE IN PICTURES is a recommended pictorial biography which shares the experiences of a flamboyant conductor, and which is a recommended pick for any music library in general and particularly those catering to classical music fans. Photos follow the career of the conductor, from his childhood to his last days, and follow his rise to fame and the appearances that made him famous. It's a gorgeous presentation indeed, suitable for coffee tables and library shelf alike.
